It’s apple season! Pie season! It’s chilly outside! It’s Autumn!
Writing this blog post live from my office chair wrapped up in my favorite sweater and oh, what’s that on my feet? Uggs. Yes, I’m wearing my Uggs. It’s the best time of year and my favorite time to cook cozy food.
These apple pie turnovers with puff pastry are truly, so simple to make and so cozy.
The magic of puff pastry never ceases to amaze me! Puff pastry makes creating a quick dessert or pastry so simple and so delicious with its flaky, buttery texture.
Ingredients for Apple Pie Turnovers with Puff Pastry
- 5-6 honey-crisp or granny-smith apples
- butter
- lemon juice
- brown sugar
- pumpkin pie spice
- flour
- one sheet of puff pastry (thawed!)
- egg & one tablespoon of water for the egg-wash
- Turbinado sugar for topping
How to make Apple Pie Turnovers with Puff Pastry Filling
Peel, core, and dice your apples into 1 to 2-inch-sized pieces.
In a large skillet, over medium heat, melt the butter. Add in apples, lemon juice, brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice, and flour. Mix until well combined. Continue to cook over medium heat for 5-10 minutes until apples are soft and easily pierced with a fork.
Set aside to cool!
How to prepare the puff pastry
On a well-floured surface, roll out the puff pastry into a square shape rather than a rectangle as it comes out of the packaging. This will help make sure the turnovers are even when folding them!
Cut the puff pastry sheet into four even squares. Fill each square with about 3 tablespoons of apple filling.
Then, taking the top right corner and folding it on top of the bottom left corner, creating a triangle. Using the tines of a fork, press along the edges to seal the pastry. Brush the unbaked turnovers with egg-wash and top with Turbinado sugar.
You’re ready to bake! 🙂
